Financial liquidity is the ability to meet short-term obligations without breaking operations. Classic ratios (current, quick, and cash) come from the balance sheet; real liquidity shows up in the cash calendar, aging, and commitments the balance sheet does not yet show.
A “good” month-end ratio can hide clustered maturities next week. That is why liquidity needs both the statement and treasury: cash management, cash conversion, and leverage.
What financial liquidity is
Usual ratios:
- Current ratio: current assets / current liabilities.
- Quick ratio: (current assets − inventory) / current liabilities.
- Cash ratio: cash and equivalents / current liabilities.
They measure structural headroom. They do not replace treasury's question: “do we have money in the right account on the right date?”.
Working capital (current assets − current liabilities) is the fuel for that headroom. If the operating cycle lengthens, accounting liquidity can look stable while cash tightens.
Why it matters
Weak liquidity creates:
- late suppliers and lost discounts;
- emergency use of expensive lines;
- covenant risk;
- hiring and CAPEX freezes.
Idle excess liquidity also has a cost: spread left on the table and diluted ROIC. The point is policy, not “more is always better”.
